Surveillance of Aethina tumida in Italy in 2016
According to data published by the Italian National Reference Laboratory, on November 29th, 40 apiaries were detected infested by the small hive beetle in the region of Calabria (red crosses on the maps).
These cases were mostly discovered during the months of September and October, and are located in the protection zone established in the province of Reggio Calabria.
No new outbreaks have been detected in the province of Cosenza since the last case was discovered in early September.
In all positive apiaries, SHB adult beetles were observed. Three of them also presented larvae of Aethina tumida.
In the Reggio Calabria protection zone, the surveillance of sentinel apiaries revealed a small hive beetle circulation in the environment; five sentinel apiaries were found positive between April and October 2016 (purple crosses on the maps).
The sanitary situation in Sicily remains unchanged. To date, no new outbreaks have been identified in 2016.

On the new maps available on the Italian NRL website dated from the 30th September 2016, 222 apiaries were reported to have been inspected in Calabria and 395 in Sicilia (green dots). Nuclei (purple dots) were settled particularly in locations where apiaries had been previously found positive and destroyed. They aim at detecting the remaining presence of coleopterans in the environment.
Aethina tumida adult specimens have been detected in 4 sentinel apiaries located in the protection zone in Calabria. All sentinel nuclei have been found positive twice for the small hive beetle between April and August 2016 (purple crosses).
Moreover, several new outbreaks have been spontaneously declared by the beekeepers in September, leading to 30 apiaries positive for A. tumida in the province of Calabria.
At the last EURL annual workshop (held on 4th October 2016 in Sophia-Antipolis, France), Dr Franco Mutinelli, head of the Italian NRL explained that, so far, the outbreaks of A. tumida in Calabria were all located within the same protection zone when the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 were compared.
In Cosenza, a fifth apiary was found positive for A. tumida. This apiary belonged to the same beekeeper who owned the four apiaries where some beetles were detected last July. This apiary has been destroyed. These outbreaks illustrate the human-assisted dissemination of A. tumida outside the protection zone.
To date, no SHB have been detected in Sicily in 2016.

On the new maps available from the Italian NRL on 26th. August 2016, 125 apiaries have been inspected in Calabria and 393 in Sicilia (green dots). Nuclei (purple dots) were settled particularly in locations where apiaries had been previously found positive and destroyed. They aim at detecting the remaining presence of coleopterans in the environment.
Aethina tumida adult specimens have been detected in in two sentinel apiaries on 10th. August 2016 located in the protection zone in the municipalities of Serrata and Maropati in Calabria (purple cross).
To date, no SHB have been detected in Sicily in 2016.

The 100 km zone for monitoring A. tumida presence in Italy (dated 26th. August 2016)
Four new small hive beetle outbreaks have been detected in Calabria on 25th. and 28th. July 2016. They are roughly 100 km from the first protection zone established in Gioia Tauro in September 2014.
The first outbreak in Cosenza was discovered in the framework of the surveillance for Aethina tumida carried out in the Calabria region in an apiary composed of 12 nuclei. Only two Aethina tumida adults were observed in this apiary. The epidemiological investigation carried out after the confirmation on 28th. July 2016 led to identify three other infested apiaries owned by the same beekeeper. A few adult specimens (maximum two) have been detected in these three apiaries. One of them has also been infested by hundreds of larvae according to the Italian NRL. All the outbreaks are within a 3 km radius. Ban of movements is enforced in a 10 km radius zone around the four outbreaks (Figure 1b). The outbreaks are roughly 100 km from the first protection zone established in Gioia Tauro in Reggio Calabria province in September 2014 where all the outbreaks have been discovered so far. The last outbreak in this area was on 5th. July in a sentinel nucleus (Figure 2). Clinical controls are being carried out in other apiaries in a 1 km radius zone from the primary outbreak with negative results so far (Figure 1a). Epidemiological investigation is under way to ascertain the path of introduction in the primary outbreak.
This information has been disseminated by the World Animal Health information system (WAHIS).
In all, six colonies out of the 128 present were found infested. All colonies of the apiaries were destroyed.
To date, no SHB have been detected in Sicily in 2016.

The 100 km zone for monitoring A. tumida presence in Italy (dated 30th. March 2016)
The small hive beetle surveillance (SHB - Aethina tumida) in the apiaries of Calabria and Sicily has resumed with the coming spring.
A. tumida has been detected for the first time in Calabria in September 2014 in the area of Reggio di Calabria. In 2014, 61 outbreaks of A. tumida have been detected thanks to the surveillance implemented (60 outbreaks in Calabria and one in Sicily). Larvae were detected in only 5 cases. About 500 apiaries have been visited and 3 500 colonies have been destructed. In 2015, 29 outbreaks were detected in Calabria (none in Sicily). Larvae were detected in only one case. About 1 000 apiaries have been visited in Calabria and 450 in Sicily.
On the new maps available on the Italian NRL, the inspected apiaries (green dots when negative for the presence of A. tumida) are differentiated from the nuclei under surveillance (purple dots when negative for the presence of A. tumida). The nuclei were particularly settled in locations where apiaries have been previously found positive and destroyed. They aim at detecting the remaining presence of coleopterans in the environment.
On 14th March 2016, 35 apiaries were visited in Calabria and 22 in Sicily. All were negative for the detection of A. tumida. No SHB have been detected in nuclei either.
