Experimental study

Ascertain different indicators and methods for broiler chicken welfare assessment under different housing conditions

The experiment aimed to know the impact of enrichments with two different stocking densities for fast growing broiler chickens reared indoor by using Animal Based Indicators and, Resource Based Indicators. A scientific paper was published based on this experimental study: Mocz et al. 2022. Positive Effects of Elevated Platforms and Straw Bales on the Welfare of Fast-Growing Broiler Chickens Reared at Two Different Stocking Densities

Scientific study 2023-2024

Validity, reliability and repeatability of two visual scoring methods of assessment of the litter quality: this study aimed to evaluate the validity, the reliability between several assessors and the repeatability for a same assessor of three visual scores from the Welfare Quality (one score) and the ClassyFarm protocols (two complementary scores: Friability and Humidity scores).

Latency-to-lie test without water is a valid objective method for on-farm assessment of walking ability of broilers: This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the Latency-To-Lie (LTL) test without using water. We tested the performance of the LTL test with and without a box to contain the birds using two broiler hybrids, Ross 308 and Rustic Gold. Latencies to lie were negatively correlated with gait scores (P<0.001), with longer standing times indicating better mobility. Within each gait score category, there was no effect of hybrid on latencies to lie for either of the tests. Using a box provided better differentiation between gait scores. The results suggest that the LTL test without water, especially with the use of a box, is a valid, objective, robust and practical method for assessing walking ability of broilers on commercial farms.

Scientific study in experimental facilities to evaluate the impacts of covered veranda on the welfare of broiler chickens on farm : This study aimed to evaluate the welfare and health of broilers with access to a covered veranda. Redbro broilers were randomly assigned to six identical rooms, each containing 2,478 birds. Half of the rooms had covered veranda access from 22 days of age, while the other half had no such access (control). Several animal-based indicators were assessed, including leg health and gait, activity levels, use of the covered veranda, mortality, and body weight. Litter quality, as well as feed and water consumption, were also monitored. Providing access to a covered veranda improved bird welfare without negatively impacting zootechnical indicators.
