EURL for Brucellosis is launching an ILPT for bovine milk serology

In order to ensure the reliability of the analyses carried out by our network of laboratories, our reference laboratory for Brucellosis is currently undertaking an inter-laboratory proficiency testing to assess the effectiveness of bovine milk serological methods.

In 2020, the reclassification of Ochrobactrum species to the genus Brucella based on recent gene-content analysis studies was proposed. There are several implications of adopting the name of Brucella for these organisms. EUCAST will during 2023, based on the work of theEMERGE AST Working Group, strive to publish clinical breakpoints and disk diffusion correlates for Brucella melitensis and Bacillus anthracis.
Through the joint effort of the group and EUCAST, MIC and zone diameter distributions are now available. ECOFFs are under development and will be available soonest.

Novel Species of Brucella Causing Human Brucellosis, French Guiana

[relayed from abstract] This paper reports 2 cases of brucellosis in male patients who were hospitalized in distinct towns of French Guiana, an overseas territory of France located on the northeastern shore of South America. Both men were citizens of Brazil working as clandestine goldminers in the deep Amazonian rainforest.
Characterization of the 2 bacterial isolates revealed that they represent a potential new species of Brucella: Brucella amazionensis.

On behalf of the International Brucellosis Society, the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise (IZS-Teramo) organized the “Brucellosis 2022 International Conference,” including the 74th Annual Brucellosis Research Conference, which will be held in Giulianova, Teramo, Italy from September 16th to 19th, 2022. The EURL team prepared a set of videos describing the different phenotypical tests applied in bacteriology. These short videos present essential steps and tests, from treatment of samples to Brucella identification.
These new pedagogical tools have been prepared within the EURL workprogramme and have been presented during our last training sessions. They may be helpful for NRLs to train new staff or to illustrate training sessions.

First case of a person contracting Brucella canis in the UK reported

A WOMAN has reportedly become the first person in the UK to contract Brucella canis, prompting vets to call for the introduction of mandatory pre-import testing of dogs for the disease.
Having contracted the disease from a Belarusian rescue dog she was fostering, the dog owner was also forced to euthanase all her family dogs following dog-dog transmission of the infection.

On December 10th, EU Reference Laboratory for Brucellosis (Animal health Institute – ANSES) organised its 13th annual Workshop. Thirty-three countries joined the meeting, with total number of 66 participants.
