Laboratory proficiency tests are a great tool to assess the application of reference methods used by EU NRLs for the detection of quarantine fungal pathogens. At the end of each proficiency test, a report with the results will be sent to all participants and EU Commission. Proficiency tests are performed under accreditation according to the ISO 17043 standard.
EURL for fungi and oomycetes will organize at least one proficiency test per year for all EU NRLs, using morphological and molecular methods for pathogen detection.
ANSES offers Leila platform for the registration, organization and participation on proficiency tests. Access and more information about the platform is available in the following link. Guides and video tutorials are provided to help with the familiarization of the platform and for the creation of user accounts.
One of the EURL activities is to keep NRLs up to date about research, providing information on EU regulated fungal and oomycete plant pathogens.
To this aim, EURL will organize a one-day annual workshop to the EU NRLs and other invited researchers, about topics of interest in mycology and plant pathology, as well as EU regulations, biosecurity, pathogen outbreaks …
EURL for fungi and oomycetes is open to suggestions for the theme of the future workshops. Submission of topic suggestions can be sent through the formulary available in the EURL website.
EURL aims to support NRLs in the application of new diagnostic methods to detect quarantine fungal and oomycete species. In this section, diagnostic protocols will be available, indicating which ones have been validated by the EURL.
An annual training course will be organized for staff of EU NRLs, and if needed, from other laboratories and experts from third countries, with the aim to improve diagnostic skills. Training courses will be organized in our facilities, in the Mycology Unit of the ANSES Plant Health Laboratory, located in Nancy, France.
The scope of the trainings will cover from the diagnostic of a specific fungal or oomycete species, to the application of diagnostic methods such as real-time PCR, among others. The trainings will include theoretical and practical sessions, and will be organized for up to five or six participants per session, and several sessions if high demand.
EURL for fungi and oomycetes website is opened
The EURL for fungi and oomycetes website is operative from 26th of September 2019. The aim of this website is to be a source or information for the general public, as well as the meeting point for all European National Reference Laboratories (EU NRLs) in mycology. For this, a common working space has been created, called 'NRLs Workspace', available for NRLs staff after registration on the website. To register to the website, please, send us an email with your request, indicating your NRL, and we will send you an activation key, needed to complete the formulary to open an account.
The main services available through the website are:
- General information about EU regulations about plant health.
- EURL missions and work plan for the current working period.
- EU NRLs network and contact details.
- Information about past and future trainings and workshops organized by the EURL for fungi and oomycetes.
- Organization of proficiency tests. Access and registration to LEILA platform, a software to perform proficiency tests.
- Information about the EURL fungal and oomycete collection and request of strains.
- EU quarantine fungal pathogens list.
- Link to EPPO and IPPC diagnostic protocols for the quarantine organisms listed by EU and in our work program.
- Lists of validated and approved reagents for diagnostic purposes.
- Diagnostic protocols, validated by the EURL.
- EURL monthly newsletter addressed to NRLs, with information about EURL activities and updates on plant pathology (new research published, new protocols, ...).
To contact us, we have a corporate email address, eurl-fungi@anses.fr, and a twitter account (@EURL_fungi).
First EURL training 2021
The first EURL training course was planned on site during the second half of 2020. However, due to the COVID19, it has been postponed it to 2021.
This first training session will be organised online on the 28th of January 2021 and will be about the identification of Fusarium circinatum, the pine pitch canker, following the organisation of the first EURL proficiency test 19FcirC.
The duration of this webinar/online training session will be half-day. The registration deadline is the 20th of January.
This webinar is addressed to NRLs who wish to reinforce their skills on the detection/identification of F. circinatum, but the participation on these training session is highly recommended for those NRLs who faced difficulties during the 19FcirC PT.
The tentative program will include:
- A presentation on the specific identification of F. circinatum in pure culture, by morphology and genetic barcode analysis;
- A presentation of the specific detection of F. circinatum by PCR and real-time PCR;
- An overview of the EPPO protocol "PM 7/91 (2) Fusarium circinatum".
