Intro [EN]:

Laboratory proficiency tests are a great tool to assess the application of reference methods used by EU NRLs for the detection of quarantine fungal pathogens. At the end of each proficiency test, a report with the results will be sent to all participants and EU Commission. Proficiency tests are performed under accreditation according to the ISO 17043 standard.
EURL for fungi and oomycetes will organize at least one proficiency test per year for all EU NRLs, using morphological and molecular methods for pathogen detection.
ANSES offers Leila platform for the registration, organization and participation on proficiency tests. Access and more information about the platform is available in the following link. Guides and video tutorials are provided to help with the familiarization of the platform and for the creation of user accounts.

Intro [EN]:

One of the EURL activities is to keep NRLs up to date about research, providing information on EU regulated fungal and oomycete plant pathogens.
To this aim, EURL will organize a one-day annual workshop to the EU NRLs and other invited researchers, about topics of interest in mycology and plant pathology, as well as EU regulations, biosecurity, pathogen outbreaks …
EURL for fungi and oomycetes is open to suggestions for the theme of the future workshops. Submission of topic suggestions can be sent through the formulary available in the EURL website.

Intro [EN]:

EURL aims to support NRLs in the application of new diagnostic methods to detect quarantine fungal and oomycete species. In this section, diagnostic protocols will be available, indicating which ones have been validated by the EURL.

Intro [EN]:

An annual training course will be organized for staff of EU NRLs, and if needed, from other laboratories and experts from third countries, with the aim to improve diagnostic skills. Training courses will be organized in our facilities, in the Mycology Unit of the ANSES Plant Health Laboratory, located in Nancy, France.

The scope of the trainings will cover from the diagnostic of a specific fungal or oomycete species, to the application of diagnostic methods such as real-time PCR, among others. The trainings will include theoretical and practical sessions, and will be organized for up to five or six participants per session, and several sessions if high demand.

New dates for the EURL proficiency test about Phyllosticta citricarpa

From 10 July 2020 to 31 December 2020

The secon proficiency test (PT) organized by the EURL for fungi and oomycetes will be about the detection of citrus black spot (CBS) pathogen, Phyllosticta citricarpa, (PT code 20Pcit), by both morphology and molecular biology methods.

The PT was planned to be celebrated during the first half of 2020. However, because of the current sanitary crisis due to the Covid-19, we have postponed the celebration of this PT to the second half of 2020.

The new dates for the celebration of this PT have been rescheduled as follows:

  • Shipping of the PT panels: 5th October 2020 (delayed one week from the original proposed date in the survey for logistic issues).
  • Last day to send us back the PT results: 7th  December 2020.
  • Last day to register in LEILA platform to participate on this PT: 4th September 2020.

This proficiency test has also been opened to third countries concerned by the "Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2019/449, amending Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2016/715 setting out measures in respect of certain fruits originating in certain third countries to prevent the introduction into and the spread within the Union of the harmful organims Phyllosticta citricarpa (McAlpine) Van der Aa", after agreement with the European Commission.

Seventh EURL Workshop

27th of May 2026, by videoconference

From 27 May 2026 to 27 May 2026

The seventh EURL Workshop will be organised on the 27th of May 2026 by videoconference.

25Cpla- EURL Proficiency Test 2025

From 22 September 2025 to 21 March 2026

This proficiency test aims to evaluate the ability of participating laboratories to identify and detect Ceratocystis platani, by both morphological or/and molecular methods.

The participating laboratories may use any approach described in the EPPO standard PM7/14(2): Ceratocystis platani https://gd.eppo.int/taxon/CERAFP/documents.

Moreover, the EURL will organise an online "informative session" addressed to EU-NRLs where the context of the PT and different aspects will be discusses, as well as the possible methods participants can use for the detection and identification of this pathogen.

24Pcit - EURL Proficiency Test 2024

From 07 October 2024 to 14 March 2025

This proficiency test aims to evaluate the ability of participating laboratories to identify and detect Phyllosticta citricarpa the causal agent of Citrus Black Spot (CBS) from pre-made samples.

This proficiency test is the second test targeting the CBS pathogen and the sixth organized by the EURL for pests on plants – on fungi and oomycetes. Considering that it may be difficult to morphologically distinguish P. citricarpa from other Phyllosticta species occurring on citrus, participating laboratories may combine different approaches. These approaches may include the distinction of morphological features of the colony, sequences of barcoding regions as well as molecular-based methods to determine the identity and the presence of the pathogen in the samples.

Moreover, the EURL will organise an online "informative session" addressed to EU-NRLs where the context of the PT and different aspects will be discusses, as well as the possible methods participants can use for the detection and identification of this pathogen.

23Bfag - EURL Proficiency Test 2023

From 23 October 2023 to 23 February 2024

This proficiency test aims to evaluate the ability of participants to detect Bretziella fagacearum, the fungal pathogen responsible for the oak wilt disease (OWD).

This is the fifth proficiency test organised under the mandate of  EURL for Pests on Plants, on Fungi and Oomycetes. For this PT, only molecular-based detection methods can be used for the detection of this pathogen.

22Tind - EURL Proficiency Test 2022

From 28 November 2022 to 03 June 2023

The EURL Proficiency Test for 2022 is based on the detection and identification of Tilletia indica, by both morphological and molecular methods.

This PT will be opened only to European Union National Reference Laboratories (EU-NRLs), and will start on end-November with the call for registration.

The shipment of the molecular biology panels is planned for the 9th of January, while the shipment of the morphology panels is scheduled for the 2nd of May. The deadline for submitting PT results is early June.

Moreover, the EURL will organise an online "informative session" addressed to EU-NRLs where the context of the PT and different aspects will be discusses, as well as the possible methods participants can use for the detection and identification of this pathogen.
