Training session on the morphological identification of Thysanoptera, with special focus on Thrips palmi Karny, 1925 (2nd edition)

From 09 November 2023 to 10 November 2023

EVENT CONCLUDED

In 2022, the first edition of our thrips training was much appreciated. Because the EURL could not actually welcome every attendants, we decided to organize a second session in 2023. Again, the main goal is the morphological identification of Thrips palmi, but it reaches a wider scope, providing an overview of the order and a methodological guidance for samples preparation. The training took place in the EURL facilities in Montferrier-sur-Lez (Montpellier) and lasted two days on November 9th-10th. It welcomed six participants.

Theory

  • Introduction to Thysanoptera. Ecology, taxonomy, economical importance...
  • Overview of classification. Suborders and main families.
  • Initiation to the morphology of Terebrantia (adults and larvae). Anatomy and nomenclature of diagnostic features, presentation of available documentation.
  • Identification of Thrips palmi (adults and larvae). Specific diagnostic features, comparison with morphologically close species.

Practice

  • Slides preparation.  Provisionnal and permanent mounting of thrips for conservation and/or routine identification.
  • Identification. Practical exercice with selected samples of larvae and adults from EURL collection.

PRE-TESTING STUDIES

Pre-testing means comparing the performance of several tests/diagnostic protocols in identifying a target organism

The EURL for Insects and Mites carries out pre-testing studies of tests/diagnostic protocols published in scientific revues. The aim of this activitiy is to select the best performing test and to submit it to a full validation study. This is done for regulated pests for which no reference diagnostic protocols are available such as those published in international or regional standards by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) or the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO). Please note that tests subject to pre-testing are not to be considered as recommended by EURL under any circumstances. Only a full validation study can lead to a recommendation for use.
